Hamburg was where Mr. Randall really nerded out; it is one of his favourite places in all of Germany. His passion for the city translated really well to the group and many students found this as their favourite stop as a result. After the train from Berlin the group found their stay at the Generator Hostel and then down to the Rathaus and the Binnenalster.
The original plan for the Sunday was to take the students to a St. Pauli football match. Mr. Young and Mr. Randall had really hoped to show the students supporter culture in European football, however the match was switched from Sunday to Friday night and we missed the opportunity. Instead, the group had the chance to go to the Millerntor-Stadion for a tour. This was exciting because the club reflects the distinct culture of the St. Pauli district. Specifically the club has adopted an outspoken stance against racism, fascism, sexism, and homophobia. Aaaaaand, as Mr. Randall will tell you St. Pauli is also a worldwide symbol for punk and related subcultures. Of course taking the UBahn was the first step
And of course there were supporters stickers everywhere
Then we had the chance to tour the stadium
In the bottom of the stadium is the Millerntor Gallery. Each year, the Millerntor Stadium becomes an open platform for dialogue and exchange about a topic through art. This year, Viva con Agua de Santa Pauli helped to chose the topic, "Water is a Human Right"
